Guyana: Truck driver electrocuted at worksite

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – An investigation into a fatal industrial accident that occurred on Saturday, at Windsor Estate East Bank, Demerara, is currently being undertaken by the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department.

The police report that Maniram Navindralall, a truck driver,  was hired to pick up and deliver four crates of concrete blocks in Windsor Estate at a private property, and while offloading the blocks, the vehicle came into contact with live wires, resulting in him being electrocuted.

Following the reports, the Assistant Chief OSH Officer Royden Croal visited the scene, where he commenced investigating to determine the causes of the accident and to provide recommendations to prevent future recurrences.

In the aftermath of the incident, Labour, Joseph Hamilton, expressed concern about the occurrence of workplace injuries and accidents and stated that when a worker leaves home and goes to work there is an expectation by the family that he or she will return home safely at the end of the day.

The Labour Minister also extended his sympathies to the affected persons.
