Government is moving to have the Best dos Santos Laboratory accredited.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, says they are hoping to have the accreditation within two years of the facility's opening.
Mr Bostic's comments came during a workshop dubbed 'Strengthening the Anti-Microbial Resistance Surveillance in the Caribbean' at the Hilton Hotel.
The health minister said Barbados is aware that microbes know no borders and have had experiences with anti-microbial resistance in 2013.
He says the role of the government laboratory is important to the development of a robust anti-microbial resistance system.
