A national food inspection manual and food sampling plan is being developed for Barbados.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Indar Weir says it is being developed to better coordinate the inspection programmes of the various government departments.

Mr Weir made the revelation during the 4th annual Barbados Food, Law and Industry conference and exhibition at the Accra Beach Hotel.

The conference, hosted by Genesis Law Chambers is being held under the theme, Legally Fit for Consumption.

Mr Weir also sees it’s necessary for Barbados to examine its national agriculture, health and food control systems.

The Minister is reminding farmers and vendors that they also have a role to play in ensuring the country's food is safe.

According to Mr Weir, the increase in trade of many commodities and the movement of animals and plants has resulted in higher risks of diseases and food contamination.

Mr Weir says his ministry recognises the weaknesses in the Barbados system and has sought to address this through its National Agriculture Health and Food Control Programme.
