Health officials in Trinidad Tuesday denied social media reports that a pregnant woman had died at the San Fernando General Hospital, south of Port of Spain on Monday night as she waited for a bed at the health institution.
In a statement, the South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) said the “assertions made in the post are libellous and are aimed at disrupting and causing fear and panic” to the patients at the health facility.
It said regardless of the “malicious intent of this posts” the SWRHA conducted its own investigation into the matter and “found them to be inaccurate.
“For the last 24 hours, the bed capacity at the Obstetric Department remains at a manageable figure with beds being available. It should be noted that pregnant women can seek care via both the Emergency department and the Labour Ward,” the SWRHA said, adding that it has accounted for five deaths on Monday night including one male at the resuscitation room.
