Entertainment pioneer Lord Radio has passed away

Entertainment pioneer Oliver Broome, better known as Lord Radio, has died.

He passed away this morning.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, while extending condolences, says Lord Radio had given more than half a century of his life to the entertainment industry and by extension, to the development of Barbados’ tourism product.

She says the folksy, authentic calypso style he took into hotels around the country when the industry was still fledgling, was a big part of what helped to establish the island’s enviable record for repeat visitors.

Prime Minister Mottley says the tourism sector, the entertainment industry and Barbados in general, owe him a profound debt of gratitude when his many years of faithful service to the Crop-Over Festival are considered.

She says Lord Radio and his Bimshire Boys Band were a regular fixture on the touring stage, and he made a name for himself across the region, the United States and Canada, as well as Europe.

Prime Minister Mottley described Lord Radio as a consummate ambassador for his profession and for Barbados and says he served with distinction as a member of the Barbados Board of Tourism.

She extended deepest condolences to his wife Shirley, his children, friends, and colleagues in the entertainment industry, on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados.
