Romeo passes on

Romeo passes on
06 Jun

"A gem gone"

It's not only a line from one of his more popular songs, but that's how at least one of his colleagues wants calypsonians Charles "Romeo" Smith to be remembered.

Romeo passed away early Wednesday morning from what relatives suspect was a heart attack.

Fellow calypsonian, Smokey Burke says Romeo was a modern day pioneer of the art form.

On a more personal note, chairman of the National Cultural Foundation, Cranston Browne says their interactions came when Romeo was a member of the legendary Battleground Calypso Tent.

Relatives say he was preparing to make his customary morning call to the radio station when he complained of not feeling well.

Culture Minister John King says it is a sad day as Barbados has lost one of the great sons and pioneers of Calypso.

In his tribute, Mr King says Romeo, who was a mentor to many, willing showed the young artistes the ropes of the industry.

The culture minister explains Romeo will definitely be honoured during the Crop Over festival.
