One out of two adolescent girls in the Caribbean has reported that her first sexual encounter was not voluntary.
This from Canada’s high commissioner to Barbados, Marie Legault.
She says this is a clear indication that more attention needs to be paid to sexual violence and assault against women.
Madame Legault was also one of the speakers at the official launch of the Barbados Bench Bar journal, 2018, which was funded by the Impact Justice project through the Canadian government.
Madame Legault says those statistics are worrying but she's heartened that the spotlight has already been turned on the issue in Antigua.
Legault says two weeks ago, the jurist project created history by setting up a sexual offences model court in the country to go along with a set of guidelines adopted previously.
