A series of immigration-related operations in New York City in which at least one Jamaican was picked up is causing unease among some Jamaicans in the United States.

The identity of the Jamaican citizen has not been released.

However, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency says the Jamaican was convicted for first degree assault of an 11-year-old child.

41 persons were arrested across New York City in the past week in what it describes as targeted enforcement operations aimed at immigration fugitives, criminal aliens and persons who illegally re-enter the US.

The agency sought to downplay reports that the operations were part of a crackdown ordered by US President Donald Trump, saying its agents do not carry out raids that indiscriminately target aliens.
