Barbados calling for global methane agreement

October 23, 2024

Barbados has warned the world will face more complex problems, if countries do not act with urgency in addressing the climate crisis.

This message was conveyed by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

She was the featured speaker for a discussion on International Financial Architecture Reform for the global south.

The discussion was organised by Global Economy and Development at Brookings and the Boston University Global Development Policy Centre.

The Prime Minister is leading a delegation at the ongoing 2024 annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington D.C.

Ms. Mottley, who chaired a meeting of the climate vulnerable group and scientists, made a call for a global methane agreement, given the impact of the gas on the climate compared to carbon.

Ms. Mottley says the climate crisis, war, crime and even pandemics can catapult countries back into poverty.

She wants climate-vulnerable economies shock-proofed.
