Barbadians challenged to grow more food

October 16, 2024

A challenge has been issued for Barbadians to grow more food.

It comes as the country joins the world in observing World Food Day.

Acting Deputy Chief Agriculture Officer Barney Callender, says the cost of nutritious food is too high, and as a result the less fortunate cannot afford it.

But he believes, increasing local production could help drive down those costs.

Mr. Callender was speaking as the Ministry of Agriculture presented hampers containing fruits and vegetables to three organisations which assist the most vulnerable.

They are the HIV/Aids Food Bank, Street Lamp Ministries and the Child Care Board.

Representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Juan Cheaz has made a call for food loss and waste to be addressed.

He says while enough food is produced to cover the world’s population, almost a third of it is lost or wasted.
