Bico workers strike over working conditions

Bico employees were off the job today.

More than 50 workers from various departments assembled outside the manufacturing plant with representatives of the Barbados Workers Union.

BWU negotiator Alexandria Thomas says the work stoppage is a reaction to environmental concerns, health and safety issues as well as a breakdown in wage negotiations.

Ms. Thomas says workers are also frustrated that they have not been given a wage increase in the past seven years despite negotiations between management and the union.

Meanwhile, Executive Chairman of Bico Edwin Thirlwell tells CBC News he is unable to comment on the matter.
