More concern over EVs with lithium-ion batteries

October 15, 2024

A collision involving two cars, one of them a hybrid, erupted into a raging inferno that blocked a major roadway today, igniting more concerns about electric vehicles that carry lithium-ion batteries.

A cellphone video showed the blaze and billowing black smoke from a Toyota CHR Hybrid and a Toyota Corolla, that were involved in the accident on the main road at Sterling in St. Philip.

Both vehicles were destroyed.

The Barbados Fire Service responded to the fire.

Acting Station Officer Charmaine Sandiford tells CBC News that after receiving the call about the blaze around 1 p.m., Two crews responded from St. John and Worthing Fire Stations, under the Command of Divisional Officer Damian Bayne.

The Station Officer says the service is concerned that the CHR is the second vehicle with an ion battery to be involved in a fire in a matter of weeks.
