Sir Henry de Boulay Forde dies at age 91

Barbados has lost one of its most outstanding legal minds and astute politicians Sir Henry de Boulay Forde.

He died this afternoon at the age of 91.

The Barbados Labour Party stalwart served as the leader of the opposition from 1986 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1993.

He also served as the Attorney-General from 1976 to 1981 Sir Henry was born on 20 March 1933 in Water Street, Christ church, to a working-class family.

He attended Christ Church Boys’ Foundation School and later attended Christ’s College, Cambridge University for his law degree and was admitted to the British and Barbadian Bar in 1959.

He first won the Christ Church West seat in 1971 and held it for 30 years until 2003.

Sir Henry chaired the Constitution Review Commission 1 in 1996 which reviewed the constitution of Barbados in regards to preparing for Barbados to become a Republic.

Sir Henry Forde is also known as a champion of women’s rights.

He successfully proposed the establishment of a national commission on the status of women.

Sir Henry Forde was also an integral member of the Government that championed and passed a seminal piece of legislation the Tenantry Freehold Purchase Act.
