Severe Thunderstorm, Flash-Flood Warnings extended

October 6, 2024

The Barbados Meteorological Services has extended the Severe Thunderstorm Warning and the Flash-Flood Warning for the island.

It notes that “lighting activity at or near your location could result in power outages if lighting strikes power utility infrastructure. Persons are reminded that lightning strikes can be life-threatening.”

Unstable conditions “are generating severe thunderstorms across the island. This activity is expected to persist overnight, and as a result, a Severe Thunderstorms Warning is in effect.”

The Met Office also states that “rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.”

Take note of the possible following impacts:
-Water settlements on roads and fields, at the foot of hills and coastal roads
-Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows
-Delays on traffic routes, with some roads becoming impassable in and out of minor towns.

The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.

A Severe Thunderstorms Warning is issued when significant lightning activity is expected in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) or is already occurring within the warning area. This severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 6:00 p.m. today, Sunday, October 6, 2024, and will be terminated at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, October 7, 2024, or sooner if conditions warrant.
