Incidence of cardiovascular events among younger men a concern

October 4, 2024

The high incidence of cardiovascular events affecting younger men is causing concern here in Barbados.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Health Davidson Ishmael says in 2020, there were 547 incidents recorded compared to 294 in 2011.

He says data shows the increase is influenced by lifestyle-related risk factors and demographic shifts.

Among initiatives aimed at helping Bajans improve their health are a National Nutrition Policy and a National Workplace Wellness Policy.

Minister Ishmael was speaking while delivering the feature address at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados’ 5th Annual World Heart Day Luncheon at Sandals Royals.

President of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados Dwight Moseley says their Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Programme supports approximately 137 individuals with at least eight referrals monthly, which includes cardiac and stroke patients.

He says going forward, it is their intent to have two individuals in every household trained in CPR and first aid in the event of cardiac emergencies.
