Flash-Flood Watch in effect overnight

September 25, 2024

A tropical wave will produce occasional periods of cloudiness and moderate to heavy showers across the island throughout the night.

As the tropical wave affects the island overnight rainfall accumulations reaching up to 30 mm from occasionally cloudy skies are anticipated across the island. Due to the already saturated nature of the environment, any additional rainfall throughout the night is likely to generate flooding in flood-prone areas. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash-Flood Watch for overnight.

A flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall could result in flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Take note of the possible impacts:
-Runoff from higher elevations -Some soil erosion -Water settlements on roads and fields -Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast moving water flows -Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable .

The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management and monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.

This Flood Watch is valid from 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, September 25, and will be terminated at 6 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, September 26, or sooner if conditions warrant.
