Flash-Flood Watch issued

September 24, 2024

A tropical wave is producing intermittent showers and thunderstorm activity over and around the island.

Instability associated with the tropical wave will continue fluctuating throughout the day. This will result in occasional downpours which could produce up to 50 mm of rainfall across sections of the island. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash-Flood Watch.

A Flash-Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible. This Flash Flood Watch was issued at 9 a.m. and will be updated/terminated at 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, September 24, 2024, or sooner if conditions warrant.

There is a medium possibility of flooding which may result in the following possible impacts:

•Runoff from higher elevations

•Some soil erosion

•Water settlements on roads and fields

•Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows

•Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable.

The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management and monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.
