Flash-Flood Watch extended

September 17, 2024

A shearline will be generating intermittent moderate to heavy showers and possible thunderstorms across the island throughout the day.

A shear line affecting the island generated intermittent moderate to heavy showers and a few isolated thunderstorms this morning. Pockets of moderate shower activity are expected to continue throughout the day which could generate flooding across low-lying areas. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has extended a Flash-Flood Watch.

This alert is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Take note of the following possible moderate to significant impacts:

  • Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces
  • Water settlements on roads and fields may lead to commuting delays and possible isolated diversions
  • Increases in water levels of existing water bodies (e.g. ponds etc.)
  • Marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains/water canals and on property.

The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management and monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.

This Flash Flood Watch was issued at noon today, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, and will be terminated at 6:00 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
