NCDs responsible for 80% of deaths locally

September 11, 2024

Non communicable diseases are responsible for 80% of deaths in Barbados, with approximately 40% of adults living with at least one NCD.

That’s according to Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Wellness Davidson Ishmael, who notes the prevalence of diabetes and obesity, especially among the youth, is also at a very concerning level.

He says the Ministry is currently working on a new NCD Risk Factor Survey.

The Minister was addressing the opening of the National Forum for NGOs on Non Communicable Diseases where he stressed that NCDs continue to be a significant burden on Government’s pockets.

Mr. Ishmael says the Ministry is currently working with partners to develop the Barbados National Nutrition Policy which promotes food security, reducing obesity rates and addressing the increasing prevalence of diet related NCDs.

Minister Ishmael says Cabinet has approved a recommendation for September 2024 to be recognised as National Wellness Month.
