Barbados Fire Service celebrating 69 years

The Barbados Fire Service has evolved over the past 69 years with the entity now not solely associated with addressing fires.

Officers in its training programme, aside from being trained as basic fire officers, are also taught to be emergency medical technicians.

Station Officer Damien Bayne says this ensures these professionals can administer pre-hospital care when responding to incidents, until an ambulance arrives.

He says training has expanded over the years and will continue to be upgraded to meet the requirements of society.

Station Officer Bayne was a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.

A week of activities is planned for Fire Service Week from September 29 to October 5.

It will be observed under the theme “Acknowledging the Past, Acclaiming the Present, Adapting to the Future”.

Divisional Officer Marlon Small says the week will commence with a church service at the Bethel Methodist Church on Bay Street.

A highlight of the Fire Service Week is the Chief Fire Officer’s Parade and Awards ceremony on October 4.
