BWU calls for reform in tourism industry

August 14, 2024

The Barbados Workers Union is calling for greater worker protection and reform in the tourism industry.

The call comes in the wake of the layoffs of more than 200 workers at Sandals Resort.

The BWU says there is need for clarity surrounding the move noting the action is neither normal nor acceptable.

It states the description of these layoffs as seasonal by the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association cannot and must not be accepted as merely the norm.

The BWU in a statement says the layoffs are not just about industry patterns or business as usual, but the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of Barbadians.

It stresses tourism is not just another industry in Barbados and recent reports highlight the strong recovery of the sector.

The Union adds the sector’s resilience, even in the face of challenges like Hurricane Beryl, shows that Barbados’ tourism is not only recovering but thriving.
