Changes brought to Bail Bill Act

July 30, 2024

The Parliament of Barbados has brought new legislation to make it harder for people who commit murder and firearm offences to get bail.

According to the Bail Bill, 2024 defendants will have to provide satisfactory evidence as to why they should be granted bail.

Attorney General Dale Marshall, introduced the Bill, as he expressed concern about the 26 murders recorded so far for 2024, up from 21 recorded in 2023.

17 of the murders this year were committed using firearms.

Mr. Marshall says the Bill is based on South Africa’s legislation, which he says has constitutional positions similar to Barbados.

Acknowledging that if crime makes people feel unsafe, it could have an impact on the economy, Mr. Marshall says the authorities are redoubling efforts instead of panicking.
