GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Polic say they have detained two members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) after they were caught with more than 300 pounds of illegal drugs on Saturday night.
The police said that the two soldiers were arrested during an intelligence-led operation by the Special Branch and other police units and that they were in possession of 316 pounds of narcotics.
The authorities did not give the street value of the drugs seized but said that law enforcement officials had intercepted a bus on Mandela Avenue, behind the botanical garden in the capital.
They said the bus was owned and was being driven by a 40-year-old GDF corporal, while the other, a 24-year-old Lance Corporal, was a passenger.
They said that the soldiers, the bus and the seized narcotics, were transported to the East La Penitence Police Station and that the soldiers remain in custody as investigations continue.
This drug bust follows a similar operation last week in which two other senior GDF members were arrested with 154 pounds of cannabis.
