Regional agriculture takes a blow due to Hurricane Beryl

July 8, 2024

The region’s agriculture sector is estimated to have suffered tens of millions of dollars in damage, as a result of Hurricane Beryl.

This is according to Lead Head of CARICOM with Responsibility for Agriculture and Food Security and President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali.

He says as a consequence, there’s been a tremendous setback to the region’s goal of reducing its food import bill by 25% by 2025.

President Ali has asked the chair of CARICOM’s Ministerial Task Force on Agriculture, to convene a meeting to look at, among other things, the types of crops that can withstand stronger weather conditions.
