June 8, 2024

Australia showed they are serious contenders for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a workmanlike 36 run victory over defending champions England at Kensington Oval this afternoon.

David Warner 39, Mitchell Marsh 35, and Marcus Stoinis 30 powered the Aussies to 201-7, after they were sent into bat.

Chris Jordan took 2-44.

In reply England were held to 165-6 in their 20 overs.

Pat Cummins took 2-23 and Adam Zampa 2-28.

The Aussies top Group “B” with four points, followed by Scotland with three.

Meanwhile, David Miller struck a high-quality 59 not out to help South Africa recover from a terrible start and post a four-wicket win over the Netherlands in today’s first World Cup game in New York.

Miller guided South Africa to their second win in as many matches, while putting on a crucial 65-run stand for the fifth wicket with Tristan Stubbs who added 33.

The Proteas were reduced to twelve for four inside the powerplay but they recovered strongly and finished on 106 for six in 18.5 overs chasing 104.

Earlier, pacer Ottneil Baartman took 4-11 as the Netherlands were held to 103 for nine.

Tomorrow it will be a big one – India vs Pakistan in New York at 10:30 a.m.

Then at 1:00 p.m. Oman will battle Scotland in a Group “B” match in Antigua.

Live coverage will be on MCTV’s ESPN channels and radio station 94.7 FM.
