President of the Barbados Bar Association Kaye Williams is pleased Government has accepted their recommendation and officially discontinued the use of the titles King’s Counsel (KC) and Queen’s Counsel (QC) in Barbados.
According to Ms. Williams the decision was long overdue.
She says the Bar is on record as having raised its objection surrounding this issue in 2021 when the Constitution Amendment Act was passed and again in 2022 with the passing of her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll.
According to the BBA President, this move now opens Barbados to be defined as a true Parliamentary Republic.
The notice of the discontinuation was published in the Official Gazette on September 1.
It indicated that with immediate effect all members of the legal profession who are currently appointed to the rank will now be known as Senior Counsel and use the post nominals SC.
