A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Barbados.
The Barbados Meteorological Services says this alert message will be updated at 6:00 p.m. today, or sooner if conditions warrant.
A Flash Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.
The BMS says a tropical wave will continue affecting the island this afternoon and into tonight.
Accumulations of up to 1 inch of rainfall have already occurred mainly across northern, western and some central sections of the island this morning. Shower activity is expected to increase into tonight with a further 1 to 3 inches and possibly isolated higher amounts. These wet conditions are forecast to persist throughout the weekend.
This watch may be upgraded to a warning at short notice.
The public is advised that the following may occur:
- Runoff from higher elevations.
- Soil erosion on exposed or scarred land surfaces.
- Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads.
- Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc).
- Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows.
- Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable in and out of minor towns.
- This alert level could elevate to red.
