From Monday, December 5, Barbados’ new polymer banknotes will go into circulation.
In a release, the Central Bank of Barbados says the notes will last longer in circulation and will be more difficult to counterfeit.
Director, Currency and Payments Oversight at the Central Bank of Barbados Octavia Gibson says the notes will be issued to commercial banks, which will then make them available to their customers. Members of the public will not be able to go directly to the Central Bank to get the new notes.
Ms. Gibson also confirmed that Barbadians will still be able to continue using the existing paper notes as the new ones go into circulation, and businesses should therefore continue to accept them.
