The Environmental Health Department has trained about eight thousand food handlers in Barbados, and Health Minister Donville Inniss has encouraged food vendors on the island to make the most of these opportunities when given the chance.

He was speaking during the opening ceremony for a health expo, put on by the environmental health department at the Branford Taitt Polyclinic.

Mr. Inniss told the vendors they should always observe the correct safety and health practices as they try to earn a living during the Crop Over season and beyond.

Chief Environmental Health Officer, Tyrone Applewhite says there are plans to upgrade the type of qualification given to food handlers who complete the department's training.

According to him, they've developed an 18 hour food safety programme that comes with a certificate from the Barbados Community College.
