The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) is urging more Barbadians to pursue studies in areas such as Geriatrics and Gerontology.
This as Barbados celebrates Senior Citizens Month in September, and looks towards the United Nations International Day of Older Persons on October 1st, 2018.
The BARP Charitable Trust says it is doing more than talking by encouraging academic study in an area that will benefit older persons, such as those who are members of BARP.
BARP says it is offering an annual scholarship to nationals of Barbados pursuing full-time post-graduate studies related to ageing at the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The scholarship is tenable for one academic year, and the value is BDS$10,000.
Globally, there are currently 700 million people over the age of 60, and this figure is expected to rise to 2 billion by 2050.
In Barbados, it is projected that by 2050 between 25 and 33 percent of the Barbados population will be aged 65 and over.
