Several young people in Barbados have been diagnosed with a disease typically known to affect the elderly.
This revelation came from Professor David Corbin, trustee of the Barbados Parkinson's Trust and Support Group.
Professor Corbin was addressing the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Barbados West which has teamed up with the Trust to bring awareness to the disease.
Internationally, April has been designated Parkinson's awareness month.
But the professor admits the absence of a national register means an accurate number of sufferers on island is unknown.
According to the professor, who is also a consultant neurologist with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, much still needs to be done to educate the public.
People with Parkinson's, their caretakers and health professionals are being urged to attend a seminar set for Saturday, to hear presentations from specialists who treat some of the issues associated with the disease.
