Barbados continues to spend millions of dollars on waste disposal every year.
This is according to economics professor, Winston Moore.
He says this is something which needs to be looked at as pointed out in the Green Economy Scoping Study.
Professor Moore who is head of the Economics Department at the UWI Cave Hill campus, says from 2016 to 2017 the Sanitation Services Authority spent 50.2 million dollars getting rid of the island's waste, and this figure is set to rise in the coming years.
Professor Moore was speaking during a panel discussion to mark World Social Work Day 2018.
It was held under the theme 'Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability.'
Programme manager with the Future Centre Trust Ann Harding says, there is an urgent need for Barbadians to reduce, reuse and recycle.
She says recycling is not hard for people to do.
