The Barbados Nurses Association is pleased with the developments in the health sector over the years.
President, Joannah Waterman says expanding community mental health and decentralizing services like dialysis and HIV treatment are all key to continuously improving the sector.
She says however, these and other factors - like the growing older population and the increasing number of people with chronic non-communicable diseases - are placing a much heavier burden on the nursing community.
According to Ms Waterman part of the problem is an old system which speaks to nursing quotas.
Ms Waterman says the Nurses Association is preparing to review its strategic plan to get a clearer picture of the numbers required for the various departments.
