HSBC, TSB and Barclays customers were locked out of their accounts this morning as the banks faced problems with their mobile banking apps.

HSBC customers said the app displayed a message saying that there 'appears to be a system problem' on what is payday for millions of people in Britain.

Other people saw a message saying: 'We can't establish a stable connection to HSBC. Ensure you have a good WiFi or mobile network signal, and try again.'

TSB customers, who have faced severe disruption already this year due to IT glitches, also reported problems with the mobile banking app this morning.

And there was also a half-hour period when Barclays mobile banking was also down this morning. Whether the three issues were linked was not immediately clear.

HSBC has 17 million personal and business customers in Britain. One Twitter user joked that the bank 'don't want me to see my paycheck'.

Another HSBC user asked: 'Why is the app down on payday?' - and a further customer said: 'Can't log on - tried multiple times on different devices.'

HSBC said this morning that its service was recovering, with the first issues reported at around 7.45am.
