Barbados has a new opposition leader.
Member of Parliament for St. Michael West Bishop Joseph Atherley took the oath of office before Governor General Dame Sandra Mason at Government House Friday morning.
According to a release issued Thursday night, Bishop Atherley informed Prime Minister Mia Mottley by letter of his intention to serve in opposition to the Barbados Labour Party government.
This was further confirmed by letter from Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason.
Many were shocked by the announcement; however Bishop Atherley says he had what he described as a cordial meeting with the Prime Minister two nights ago.
He says he is simply responding to the need for a physical opposition presence in Parliament.
Bishop Atherley confirmed that he still supports the BLP's policies as per their manifesto.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue agitating for the interests of the people in the St. Michael West constituency.
The opposition leader says he is in the process of selecting opposition senators and these will be announced shortly.
