Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and historian, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles is among nine writers announced on the longlist for the 2017 OCM Bocas prize for Caribbean literature.
His book is titled, The First Black Slave Society: Britain's "Barbarity Time" in Barbados, 1636-1876.
The book provides a history of the first 140 years of the colonisation of Barbados.
The Bocas prize, now in its seventh year, recognises books in three genres, poetry, fiction, and literary non-fiction, published by Caribbean authors in 2016.
The winners in each genre will be announced on March 27th and the prize of US$10,000 will be presented to the overall winner on April 29th, during the annual Bocas Lit Fest in Trinidad and Tobago.
