Barbados has its first poet laureate.
She is award winning poet Esther Phillips.
Ms. Phillips received her instruments of appointment at the Ministry of Culture.
Culture Minister Stephen Lashley says her designation took effect from February 8th and she will be known as Barbados' literary ambassador.
He says Ms. Phillips will hold the title for three years and this may be extended by the Cabinet.
Mr. Lashley says Ms. Phillips has made a significant contribution to the literary arts in Barbados and will have great responsibility in her new role.
Ms. Phillips says she is very humbled by the honour and will be continuing the work she has been doing to bring a greater consciousness to Barbadian writing.
