Challenges with the fleet of the Sanitation Service Authority, coupled with improper waste disposal of some householders are adding to the island's garbage woes.
Public relations officer, Carl Padmore is reminding Barbadians that they can make a difference by separating their garbage at the point of source.
Of concern to the SSA is the way some dispose of waste when "cleaning house".
Mr Padmore says their lorry loaders are still finding items among the garbage that shouldn't be there.
Deputy Environmental Officer Ronald Chapman says there is an increase in the rodent population given the current garbage problem.
Mr Chapman says they are also facing problems from cats and yard fowls.
