Several Meetings For PM Mottley At US Summit

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has been participating in a number of events at the September 12 to 14 Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, USA, which ends today.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mottley participated in the breakfast meeting Changing the Climate Conversation: Enabling Women’s Participation to Advance Climate Justice, at the Green Room at the War Memorial.

It was co-chaired by three distinguished women: Chairperson of the California Air Resources Board, Mary Nichols; Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Patricia Espinosa; and President of the Mary Robinson Foundation, Climate Justice, Mary Robinson.

Those at the Prime Minister’s table included Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change, Patricia Fuller, and United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, Jayathma Wikramayak.

Later in the day, Ms. Mottley convened a bilateral meeting with Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Erik Solheim, who was accompanied by Special Assistant to the Executive Director, Marte Sendstad; and Regional Director for the UN Environment North America Office, Barbara Hendrie. Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Alies Jordan, was also present.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister participated in a high-level Talanoa dialogue, which gave participants the opportunity to share stories, build empathy and to make wise decisions for the collective good.

Talanoa is a traditional word used in Fiji and across the Pacific to reflect a process of inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue and it involves the sharing of ideas, skills and experience through storytelling.

The dialogue was convened by the Fijian Presidency and some of the participants included: California Governor, Jerry Brown; United Nations Climate Change Executive Secretary, Patricia Espinosa; UN Youth Envoy, Jayathma Wikramayak; Mahindra Group CEO, Anand Mahindra; and China’s Special Representative for Climate Change, Xie Zhenhua.

In the evening, Ms. Mottley convened a bilateral meeting with New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change, James Shaw. It was attended by Permanent Secretary (PS), Alies Jordan; and Assistant Director-General on Climate and other Determinants of Health at the World Health Organization, Dr. Joy St. John.

She also met with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa. Also present were PS, Alies Jordan; and Dr. Joy St. John.

Later that evening, Prime Minister Mottley attended a dinner hosted by former Mayor of the City of New York, Michael Bloomberg, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
